Yes, i’m talking to you. Whether you’re short, slim, tall or bigger boned, this will work for you – and I give you my promise that it can make you look so good, that you’d be able to distract Narcissus from his reflection.
What is this wonder, I hear you ask? Gentlemen (and ladies), the answer to this, is sunscreen. OK -, I know i’ve lost most of you already, but to those left, stick with me on this one. I won’t patronise you with lectures on skin cancer, but did you know that sunscreen is the best protection against premature ageing? (yes, even more so than the £100’s pots of creams that promise you eternal youth, and the irony is, even those products that help to reverse sun damage, can actually cause you to be more photosensitive, if you don’t adequately protect yourself!).
Overexposure to UV light has the effect of breaking down the collagen in your skin and impairs its ability to renew it, causing your skin to become leathery, loose and wrinklier before its time. What this means is that you’ll eventually look like Donatella. Some also make the mistake of thinking that sunscreen is only necessary on sunny days during the warmer months, but UV rays are still present all around us even on cloudy, rainy days.
So without further ado, here are my top picks for suncare:
Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50
As per the name, it has an amazingly light texture – non greasy and non oily, yet moisturises enough that you can dispense with using an additional moisturiser. 60ml for £31 available at Kiehl’s
La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra Light Fluid SPF 50+
I have been a convert to the french pharmacy staple that is La Roche-Posay, ever since their dedicated product ranges by skin type brought my adolescent skin under control. As expected, they have an incredible suncare line tailored to your specific skin, and I urge you to browse their line to find one that suits you. I use this particular fluid which I find absorbs well, though I do find it slightly on the oily side. Nevertheless, this is a must at the peak of summer or on holiday in warmer climes. 50ml for £16.50 available at Boot’s, though at the time of writing, the product is currently on offer for £11
Shiseido Urban Environment UV Protection Cream SPF 30
This feather-light cream is particularly good for protecting against not only the sun’s rays but harmful pollutants that can harm the skin. 50ml for £30.50 (SPF 50 at 32.50) available at John Lewis
Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 45
This product is a god-send in the summer months where intense heat make the thought of re-applying creams to your face almost unbearable. A translucent powder that brushes on and gives immediate protection from UVA/UVB Rays. PTR also do a version for those with oily skins at a lower SPF 30. £17.60 available from salon skincare
Finally for those with Sun Intolerant skin, I bring to you the nonpareil that is Institut Esthederm. This brand dispenses with the conventional use of SPF ratings, and unlike conventional sunscreens, not only does it provide a barrier for your skin against the sun, it actively changes your skin at a cellular level to help your skin become more accustomed to the sun. Re-read, and let that sentence skin in.
Institut Esthederm Sun Intolerance High Protection Face Cream
50ml for £43 available at SpaceNK
